ROMBOUTS, SALOMON
around 1650 Haarlem - before 1702 Florence
Title: Forest Landscape on the Edge of the Village.
Technique: Oil on wood.
Measurement: 91,5 x 66,5cm.
Notation: Signed lower right: Sv(lig.) Rombouts.
Frame: Framed.
Provenance: Private ownership, Germany.
Lingering at the edge of the forest, the Dutchman Salomon Rombouts shows us a hunter taking a rest, surrounded by his dogs. Sheltered by two majestic trees, which hint at the coming autumn by their colourful dress of leaves, he sits with his back turned to us - the viewers. His gaze leads diagonally through the painting. From a distance, he observes - almost wistfully - the bustle of the neighbouring town. The resting hunter, however, takes a secondary role in the present painting. Rombouts, who came from a Haarlem family of painters, was a particularly talented landscape painter. The painting offered here also demonstrates this talent: the flora and fauna of the Dutch forest scene captivate with their almost photographic sharpness and accuracy. Individual sheets in the most varied colour gradations can be recreated and lend the painting such depth and dynamism.
