Wilhelm Christoph Diede zu Fürstenstein was the offspring of an old Hessian noble family.
In 1760, he began to make a name for himself as a diplomat at the Danish court, which announced him to the Prussian crown as the new Danish envoy in 1763. The position he took up in Berlin was not an easy one: his predecessor was very unpopular with Frederick the Great. Moreover, due to incidents during the Seven Years' War, the monarch was not very fond of Denmark. Until he was called away to London in 1767, Diede zu Fürstenstein must at least have performed well enough for Frederick to give him a generous gift. The plate presented here is from a service of 247 pieces that was presented to the diplomat as a farewell gift. Apart from the intention to show his appreciation to the envoy, Frederick certainly used this opportunity to also promote his KPM on the international stage with this beautiful service.
