Nessus and Dejanira come from Greek mythology. Nessus is the son of Ixion and Nephele. He desired the king's daughter and wife of the god Heracles, Dejanira. When she and her husband had to cross a river that was in flood, the centaur offered to carry the beauty across the river. As soon as she was on his back, he galloped off with her and kidnapped her. Heracles soon shot him with a poisoned arrow.
