SET OF THREE VERDURE TAPESTRIES WITH LANDSCAPE VEDUTAS.
France.
Date: 18th century.
Technique: Linen fabric with painted décor predominantly in shades of blue and green.
Description: Each with vast forest landscapes. The large verdure tapestries depicting river beds, once
with a bridge architecture in the center, once with several rural buildings, and once with
a large pair of birds in the forefront of the painting. The surrounding bordures with
volute ornaments in reddish brown.
Measurement: 260 x 356cm / 258 x 154cm / 260 x 293cm.
Provenance:
Private collection Hamburg.
Literature:
Reinke, Anika: Der Stoff der Räume. Textile Raumkonzepte im französischen Interieur des 18. Jahrhunderts, Textile Studies 10, Emsdetten / Berlin 2020.
In 1754, the architect Jacques-François Blondel wrote: "Décoration est la partie de l'Architecture la plus intéressante" (Reinke (2020, p.19).
Although tapestries shaped public and social spaces for centuries as an "auratic sign of power", over time they also took on an increasingly important position within the decorative concept of private interiors. They were an essential part of an aesthetic 'Gesamtkunstwerk' (ibid. p.45). In terms of motifs, they could fulfil very different tasks. Verdures, such as the examples here, on the one hand provided a landscape backdrop for the selected furnishings, but also opened up the room to an arcadian landscape and thus lifted the spatial boundaries to a certain extent.
